BCU 1 Star with Sit On Top Safety

BCU 2 Star training
Duration: 2 days
Cost: from £130

A generic paddlesport award that takes place in both closed cockpit kayaks and open canoes. Two Star is a pre-requisite to becoming a BCU coach. The training will introduce you to all the strokes required to manoeuvre both craft competently and prepare you for the assessment. At the end of the two days you will leave with a detailed action plan to help you refine your strengths and work on any weaknesses.

BCU 2 Star assessment
Duration: 1 day
Cost: from £70

With training complete, and with a good few hours of personal paddling under your belt, including three logged trips, you will be ready for your assessment!  Over the course of the day successful candidates will be expected to demonstrate their skills in both craft over a guided journey.

BCU 3 Star (Sea) Kayak training
Duration: 2 days
Cost: from £140

Completed in a closed cockpit sea kayak, this is an ideal way to explore Cornwall’s rugged coastline whilst improving your paddling. During the training the emphasis will be on developing your sea kayaking skills in a wide range of environments. This course covers personal paddling, safety and rescue, alongside planning a trip. Previous experience up to BCU 2 Star standard is essential, whilst prior sea kayaking experience is desirable but not completely necessary.

BCU 3 Star (Sea) Kayak assessment
Duration: 1 day
Cost: £70

The assessment will take place over the course of a day and will cover aspects of planning and navigation as well as on-the-water skills in moderate sea conditions.

BCU FSRT – Foundation, Safety and Rescue Training
Duration: 1 day
Cost: from £70 per person

This training course is one of the pre-requisites to become a BCU UKCC coach and covers rescues of people and boats both from the bank and from your own boat. It takes place in both kayaks and open canoes and you need to paddling at 2 Star level in both (the 2 Star award itself, however, is not essential). After all rescue and safety theory has been covered, candidates are required to deal with several scenarios in which they have to encounter an unknown incident. We also run a bank-based version of this course, initially designed for bank-based coaches who do not hold a 2 Star Award. Many kayak hire companies see this as a useful award for their staff.
